Celebrating Yara Arts Group

May 31, 2025 by ukrainianmuse

Celebrating Yara Arts Group

Yara Arts Group is a resident company of the world renowned La MaMa Experimental Theatre in New York. Virlana Tkacz founded Yara and has created over 40 shows with the company since 1990. Join us at The Ukrainian Museum for a celebration of Yara Arts Group’s 35th Anniversary with a special presentation by Virlana Tkacz. She will show images and talk about how Yara creates its visually stunning theatre pieces that explore contemporary and traditional cultures of the East, especially Ukraine, Central Asia and beyond. Because of the diversity of Yara artists, they have privileged access to magnificent texts from overlooked cultures. Each Yara production is an original theatre piece created in rehearsal with texts they have translated. Yara collaborates with artists who perform in their own languages. What follows is a layering of languages, images, music, rhythms and textures that are unique in origin but alike in their impact on the heart.

VILLAGE TO MODERN Daylong Symposium

May 17, 2025 by ukrainianmuse

VILLAGE TO MODERN Daylong Symposium

The Ukrainian Museum and the Shevchenko Scientific Society in the US are partnering to host a seminal event celebrating the Museum’s new exhibition Village to Modern.

The influence of Ukrainian folk art on the Ukrainian avant-garde in the early 20th century was transformative. With its vibrant colors, geometric patterns, and unique symbols, Ukrainian folk art played a significant role in shaping the development of new artistic movements and pushing the boundaries of artistic expression for innovative and groundbreaking works. Pioneering avant-garde artists such as Kazimir Malevich and Alexandra Exter were inspired by the authenticity of Ukrainian folk art, which had its creative roots in small villages across the country.

Join us for a daylong symposium with visual presentations by distinguished art historians, an exhibition walkthrough with the Museum’s director, and a roundtable discussion culminating with an audience Q&A. Our distinguished group of guest speakers include Dr. Myroslava Mudrak, Oksana Semenik, and Dr. Alisa Lozhkina. The program will be held throughout the day in both locations, the Shevchenko Scientific Society in the US and The Ukrainian Museum, with a light lunch at mid-day. The Ukrainian PYSANKA Through the Ages

April 5, 2025 by ukrainianmuse

The Ukrainian PYSANKA Through the Ages

The Ukrainian Easter egg, the pysanka, is a symbol of the Easter holiday, but few people are aware of the true origins of this unique pre-Christian tradition and the role it played in spring rituals. Decorated with symbols and patterns, the pysanka was revered as a talisman that provided protection from harm and brought good fortune. Join us at The Ukrainian Museum for a visual presentation by prominent pysanka artist and ethnographer Sofika Zielyk, who will discuss the evolution of the pysanka and its significance in today’s chaotic world. Museum General Admission is included.

Deconstructing Tatlin

March 22, 2025 by ukrainianmuse

Deconstructing Tatlin

The prominent avant-garde artist Volodymyr Tatlin is often described as the founder of the Constructivist movement. What happens when we deconstruct some of his projects and observe the vectors of his work? Not all of them have an ending, and some go in reverse. His biography is a meandering and wandering set of lines. Humans are not one-dimensional, so why should Tatlin or his work be seen as such? Join us at The Ukrainian Museum for a talk and visual presentation led by the Director of the Herb Lubalin Study Center of Design and Typography at The Cooper Union, Alexander Tochilovsky, to explore some of these vectors of Tatlin’s existence and add more dimension to the man behind the pioneering artist.

Admission to this event is free with the purchase of Museum General Admission at the door. Registration on Eventbrite with the link provided is required as space is limited.

Tatlin – Kobzar

February 15, 2025 by ukrainianmuse

Tatlin – Kobzar

The prominent avant-garde artist Volodymyr Tatlin traveled to Berlin and Paris
performing on the traditional Ukrainian musical instrument, the bandura, while
playing the role of a blind kobzar, a Ukrainian minstrel-bard, in a kind of conceptual
performance art that was ahead of its time. Legend has it that Tatlin performed for
Picasso in Paris. Join us at The Ukrainian Museum for an intriguing event exploring
Tatlin’s creative concept with a re-creation of these historical performances, preceded
by a talk about the historically intrinsic Ukrainian tradition of thekobzar. Our guest
speaker and musical artist will be the internationally acclaimed bandurist Julian
Kytasty. Mr. Kytasty will be joined by Ukrainian Museum director Peter Doroshenko,
who will give a talk about Tatlin’s “blind kobzar” performances. More information
and tickets are available on Eventbrite through the provided link.

Admission to this event is free with the purchase of Museum General Admission at the door. Registration on Eventbrite with the link provided is required as space is limited.
