Screening of Sand Castles and reception

October 15

6:30 – 9 pm

In-Person at the Museum

The Ukrainian Museum presents a screening of the documentary Sand Castles with Q&A by experimental engineer Mitya Zinoviev.

Sand Castles is a documentary about Ukrainian artists and engineers who create large-scale sculptures for Burning Man – a unique site of large-scale sculptural experimentation. The documentary details the construction of sculptural projects created under Zinoviev’s Kyiv-based “Wonder Workshop” that include projects such as Hedgehog Temple, Phoenix, I’m Fine, Blue Bull, Merman.

Mitya Zinoviev is a prominent Ukrainian engineer, producer, and a key figure in the Ukrainian Burners community, widely known for his leadership in bringing massive, symbolic Ukrainian art installations to the Burning Man festival for the past 5 years. He is the head of the Kyiv-based architecture and fabrication studio “Wonder Workshop” which has become a technical hub for Ukrainian artists wishing to have their art represented worldwide. Beyond fabrication, Zinoviev produced Sand Castles directed by Serhii Huleikov, a feature documentary exploring the behind-the-scenes engineering challenges and creation of these large-scale Ukrainian sculptures in the Black Rock Desert.

The documentary is a vivid exploration of Zinoviev’s fabrication process across borders, depicting how “Wonder Workshop” has become a technical hub for Ukrainian artists, designers and sculptors. This documentary was made by Fozzy Media Group in partnership with Wonder Workshop.

After the screening, there will be a reception in the Museum lobby.
