THE BOWERY: FROM TAP DANCE & VAUDEVILLE TO SKID ROW & PUNK ROCK
AN ILLUSTRATED BOOK TALK BY AUTHOR DAVID MULKINS | 7 – 8 pm
The Bowery’s rich and multi-faceted history begins with the Native American Trail, Dutch farm road, free Black homesteads, and Washington’s march route during the British evacuation. Later it became the main street of immigrants and the working class. As New York City’s first entertainment district, the Bowery has links to Vaudeville, Yiddish theater, Irving Berlin, Harry Houdini, and much more. It helped foster Abstract Expressionism, Beat literature, Free Jazz, and punk rock. Join us for a seminal illustrated book presentation by author David Mulkins with music performed by ragtime pianist Ramona Baker.

David Mulkins taught history and cinema studies for 25 years at the High School of Art and Design; he is president of the Bowery Alliance of Neighbors, author of the book The Bowery (2025), and editor/contributing writer on the historic signage project and book Windows on the Bowery: 400 Years on NYC’s Oldest Street (2020). He has presented films at Film Forum and Anthology Film Archives and has given illustrated talks about the Bowery for dozens of venues and organizations, including the Yale Club, Salmagundi Club, Untapped New York, Players Club, Cooper Union, St. Marks Church, Tenement Museum, Museum at Eldridge Street, and the Guides Association of NYC.

First Thursdays tickets are $5 for members and $10 for non-members; book presentation additional $5. More program information and tickets are available via the provided link. First Thursdays at the Museum are for 21+ only.
